A lil' glimpse into what I'm doin', thinkin', and dreamin'!
Day 6--February 28, 2008

Woke up at 8:20 A.M. Headed over to the FBO for some ground school. I received an updated set of IFR approach plates for Nebraska and Kansas. Van and I spent some time goin' over how to read them. They are basically pretty simple...and pretty complex all at the same time. I find myself bein' able to read one and think I have it down, only to turn to another one and not be able to identify what certain info means! It's a bit frustrating! I'm goin' to have to watch the King video on how to read 'em again.

Took a break from flying today. That was fine with me. It's good to mix it up a little bit every now and then.

Around noon, I took the courtesy car into town to drop off the keys to my car at the auto repair shop. I walked over to look at my car before I left, and there is an 8-foot ring of oil in front of the car. She has to be bone-dry by now. ouch.

Went back to the airport, then grabbed my gear to go fly with Jarryd and Van. We decided to head up to Miami County Airport for some BBQ. It was only 58 nautical miles away, so it made for a pretty short trip in the twin.

We walked up to the restaurant, and frankly, it's not much from the outside...just a small building. It's aptly named We-B-Smokin', and as we walked through the front doors, I got a whiff of the beautiful BBQ bein' smoked outside. That's just hard to beat. The shock effect takes place when ya walk in, though, as there is red Kansas City Chiefs memorabilia everywhere (enough to make a Bears fan cringe). But the small hallway is covered with BBQ sauces and award ribbons, so that made up for it. Ribbons are a good thing to see when you're goin' for BBQ.

And the BBQ was rather good! I ordered a beef and pork platter, and in typical small-restaurant fashion, they gave me more than I was able to finish! The fries themselves were enough to make a meal! And I was pleasantly surprised to see a couple of other airplanes there as well as locals...even in the early afternoon. They have obviously made a name for themselves.

We guys ate to our heart's content and just talked about guy stuff.

We made the short flight back, then headed inside. And I was gettin' tired. A bit later, Jarryd walked out from his room and said he thought he had food coma. Even Van was tired! Whatever it was, we were full, happy, and tired. I ended up takin' a nap from 5-ish to a bit after 8 o'clock. It felt great!

Woke up, watched a movie, then read a little bit about cross-wind landings before bed. It's always good to refresh. Ended up goin' to bed around 12:15 A.M.

I fly tomorrow at noon. And somewhere in the midst of my in-and-out nap, I heard a guy mention somethin' about the weather to Van...somethin' about it's supposed to be really nice tomorrow (55 degrees) and then somethin' else...

Crazy windy.

Imagine that. Wind in Kansas.

We were pathetic after stuffing our pie holes at that place. I didn't even eat dinner when I got home and that is pretty rare.

What is FBO you keep referring to? Flying by Obsession?; For (the) Benefit Of (Andy)?; Fix (the plane) Before Operating?

Good guesses. But you're still just a bit off. An FBO is a Fixed-Based Operator. These are located at airports and are simply there for the pilot. They offer gas, oil, and other necessities...as well as vending machines, courtesy cars (so we can head into town!), pilot supplies, bathrooms, lounges, places to read weather, and on and on and on. Some are pretty basic, while others are rather fancy. The neat part is that little Cessna's or Piper's can fly into the same FBO's as big corporate jets...and essentially use the same facilities! Now that's nice!
